Torticollis is a muscular contraction of the neck, particularly of the sternocleido-occipito-mastoid (or SCOM) muscles and the trapezius. The head is stuck on one side or the other and neck pain is felt, especially when trying to straighten it. To get you out of there, not too many choices: rest, heat and massage based on an effective synergy of essential oils.

Why these essential oils?

Lemon Eucalyptus, specific for rheumatism

It is citronellal, a monoterpene aldehyde, which provideslemon Eucalyptus essential oil the majority of its properties to treat torticollis. Citronellal is a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic agent, it is negative and therefore has soothing properties through its action on certain neurotransmitters (molecules allowing the transfer of nervous information).

Thanks to its rubefacient action (sensation of heat by dilation of the blood capillaries) which relaxes the muscles, this component fights against muscle spasms and will be all the more effective against spasmodic torticollis.

Rosemary with Camphor as a neuromuscular calmant

L'rosemary Camphor essential oil is an excellent neuromuscular relaxant. This property comes from its high percentage of camphor (14 to 24%), a ketone. It will therefore greatly reduce the tension in the muscles in the neck creating torticollis.

Camphor is also a very good analgesic due to its local anesthetic properties. Indeed, by vasodilation of the microcirculation (dilation of small blood vessels), it causes the skin to turn slightly red and causes a feeling of heat and anesthesia. This keeps your neck warm and relaxes your muscles so you can get back on your feet more quickly.

1,8-cineole and alpha pinene, two powerful anti-infectives, will also be of interest if this stiff neck comes from muscle fatigue caused by a flu-like illness.

Fragrant Wintergreen: a powerful anti-inflammatory

Methyl salicylate, a terpene ester, makes up 95 to 99% of thewintergreen essential oil. Like citronellal, it is negative. This negative nature of esters gives them powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Methyl salicylate is specialized for muscle and joint pain. Its action comes from an inhibition of pro-inflammatory enzymes. It is a very good percutaneous analgesic which will therefore effectively reduce pain due to torticollis.

This component is also a very effective muscle antispasmodic thanks to the warming it provides to the muscle (rubbing action).

Methyl salicylate (ester) combines with citronellal (aldehyde) of Lemon Eucalyptus to increase their ability to treat muscle pain and help those suffering from stiff neck.

Vetiver to repair damaged tissues

L'vetiver essential oil contains, among other things, beta vetivene, a sesquiterpene which gives it real circulatory tonic properties. Stimulation of blood circulation allows a supply of oxygen and essential nutrients to damaged tissues and faster elimination of molecules responsible for pain.

The process of natural remission (recovery) is thus accelerated, pain and muscle tension are reduced and the torticollis will disappear more quickly. The sesquiterpenes in this essential oil help the other synergistic molecules to treat torticollis thanks to their anti-inflammatory and calming properties.

Noble Laurel soothes pain

Perfectly authorized for pregnant women, laurel Noble essential oil provides an essential oil with remarkable pain-relieving properties.

It has a recognized anesthetic action on specific nerve fibers. As these nerve fibers conduct the sensation of pain, their inhibition will reduce the sharp pain felt with each head movement. Noble Laurel essential oil contains a very small amount of eugenol, a molecule that is nevertheless very powerful and responsible for its pain-relieving effects.

Fine Lavender reinforces the actions of synergy

L'fine Lavender essential oil here comes to complement in an essential way the effects of each of the components of the mixture.

Linalyl acetate and the linalool it contains have multiple properties. On the one hand, their action on pain receptors in the brain will lead to a very appreciable analgesic effect in cases of stiff neck, and reinforcing the pain-relieving power of Noble Laurel. Linalyl acetate is above all and also strongly antispasmodic and will, with the help of citronellal from Lemon Eucalyptus, cause effective relaxation of the trapezius and SCOM muscles.

Why these vegetable oils?

Arnica to reduce inflammation

In case of torticollis, the contraction of the neck muscles leads to inflammation of the tissues. THE arnica oily macerate will help Lemon Eucalyptus act at the heart of inflammation to eliminate it, providing lactones for complementary action and increased effectiveness. Additionally, since pregnant women are sensitive users, it is important to dilute essential oils for them before using them. This is how Arnica also fulfills the role of diluent, support for essential oils for effective action without danger.

St. John's Wort to support other oils

Essential oils often need a support to be used without risk of overdose. Thus, the oily macerate of St. John's wort allows you to dilute essential oils, supporting their anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. St. John's Wort will carry essential oils to facilitate their passage through the skin barrier, and thus guarantee their action at the heart of the tissues damaged by this stiff neck. The unsaponifiables of St. John's Wort oil are loaded with anti-inflammatory molecules, to silence this fire that makes you suffer in the neck.
