In all cases, cold is recommended; do not apply heat or massage. Rest your joint and surrounding muscles and supplement with anti-inflammatory, anti-hematoma and analgesic essential oils.

A moderate or severe sprain is a shock that can cause blood vessels to rupture, blood to flow into the tissues and a hematoma to appear, theitalian Helichrysum essential oil has very effective components to prevent the formation of this “bruise” and therefore the pain that follows. Italidiones, sesquiterpene ketones, are indeed very powerful anti-hematomas. Thanks to their remarkable chelating capacity, they will prevent the diffusion of blood under the skin and promote the resorption of the hematoma. Italidiones as well as neryl acetate, a terpene ester, also have anti-inflammatory properties which will reduce the edema appearing during a sprain.
Citronellal, a monoterpene aldehyde, which mainly (65 to 82%) makes up thelemon Eucalyptus essential oil provides the majority of its properties to overcome the sprain. The sprain triggers a process of inflammation, citronellal is an anti-inflammatory and a powerful anti-rheumatic agent: it relieves joint pain, it modulates the body's immune response and calms the sensations of heat and the redness that results from it. .
Citronellal is negative. It has soothing properties by acting on certain neurotransmitters (molecules allowing the transfer of nervous information) which will relax the affected person and therefore relax their muscles around the sprain. Citronellal is also a muscle antispasmodic and will relax the muscles that may be subject to these spasms; these last two properties will allow the joint to rest, which will ensure rapid recovery.
These are notably calming, anxiolytic and sedative properties that thelavandin Super essential oil brings to this synergy. Indeed, monoterpene alcohols (linalool, terpinen-4-ol) as well as linalyl acetate, a monoterpene ester, are active on the nervous system and reduce excitability. They will come to the aid of citronellal from Lemon Eucalyptus to relax the affected person in order to let their joint recover from this trauma.
The linalool and camphor in this Lavandin Super essential oil are also analgesic and musculotropic spasmolytic (promotes muscle relaxation). This essential oil will combine with those of Lemon Eucalyptus and Peppermint to reduce spasms. Indeed, linalool, present between 25 and 39% in this essential oil, competes with acetylcholine, thus limiting the ionic exchanges necessary for the passage of nerve impulses, which inhibits involuntary muscle contraction.
The sprain is mainly a pain and thepeppermint essential oil is a very good local analgesic.
It is menthol, a monoterpene alcohol, which has pain-relieving properties; it is also a local anesthetic for “cold sensation”. It therefore prolongs the vasoconstrictor effect (reduces the diameter of blood vessels) of the ice pack, often the first and intelligent reflex to sprain. Vasoconstriction of the blood vessels reduces the diameter of the vessels, therefore the size of the edema, and relieves the pain.
Menthol is also a good antispasmodic and a good anti-inflammatory. It will combine with other essential oils in synergy to increase its properties and relieve the sprain.
This is the famous analgesic property ofnoble Laurel essential oil which gives it its full place in this synergy. This property is given to it by eugenol which, even present in small quantities, is a very good painkiller. The presence of 1,8-cineole in large quantities in this essential oil allows better diffusion of the active ingredients in the skin tissues since it promotes absorption. This latter property increases the pain-relieving effect and accelerates the remission of the injury.
To support the anti-inflammatory action of Lemon Eucalyptus, Arnica oily macerate comes to bring its own little soldiers, the lactones. It thus reinforces the anti-inflammatory action of the synergy to calm the pain quickly. Thanks to its circulatory properties, Arnica will also reinforce the action of Italian Helichrysum and reduce the probability of the appearance of a bruise, which often appears following a sprain. In addition, this vegetable oil will facilitate the application of the synergy by serving as a support for essential oils.
