How to define your hair type?

Knowing the nature of your hair is essential! And André Walker did it right, and classified hair types from straightest to frizziest. In each category, he defined several variants to better understand hair. Let's take a closer look...

Type 1: straight hair

Straight hair is rather straight, it can be fine or very thick and it is often very complicated to make it curl a little. The great thing about this hair type is that it tends to be shiny and soft to the touch! There are three categories of straight hair:

  • type 1a : the hair is straight as chopsticks, very fine and shiny. It is almost impossible to make them curl, and in fact even curling irons don't always succeed! They are therefore very resistant, but have the disadvantage of tending to be greasy.

  • type 1b : they are almost the same, but a little thicker. This additional thickness allows them to have a nice volume. Again, they tend to be a little greasy but are very durable.

  • type 1c : still straight, the hair is very thick this time. This type of hair is characteristic of Asian hair, very straight and impossible to curl, but very resistant.

Type 2: wavy hair

This time, we are dealing with hair that is a little thicker and which waves, forming more or less loose “S” shapes. Moreover, the looser the curl, the easier it is to style and the less frizz you will have. Let's discover the different categories of wavy hair:

  • type 2a: the curl is loose and forms a wide “S”, the hair is finer, shinier. At the level of the hair on the top of the head, there is less volume and the hair is stuck to the head. This hair is very easy to style and tame.

  • type 2b: the hair is thicker and the “S” is tighter. They tend to frizz a little, and thus become a little more rebellious. When it has been tamed, this type's hair forms clearly visible waves.

  • type 2c: here, we are dealing with an almost curly hair. The nuance is that the hair is thick and remains in a very tight “S” shape, but not in the form of a real curl. This type of hair is more difficult to style, as frizz forms quite easily.

Type 3: curly hair

Curly hair is differentiated from wavy hair by the shape of the curl: while we had an “S” shape for wavy hair, here we are in the presence of a real round curl, more or less loose depending on the type. of curly hair. Let’s go into detail:

  • type 3a : here we are in the presence of loose and relaxed curls. The hair is very shiny and voluminous. In common parlance, this type of hair is compared to English curls.

  • type 3b : the curls are a little tighter, full of spring. In general, these curls coexist on your head with another type of texture, smoother or curlier. We also observe a lot of small frizz.

  • type 3c : this time, the curls are very tight, in the shape of a corkscrew. The hair is rather clumpy, we are on the verge of frizzy hair. The hair is very dense and voluminous.

Type 4: frizzy hair

Here, we're talking about afro cuts, frizzy hair and tight curls. Contrary to appearances, this type of hair is very fragile and requires a lot of care! Let's take a look at the subcategories of frizzy hair:

  • type 4a : the hair is frizzy and supple, but fragile. The loops are very tight but remain round and provide excellent spring. Besides, a funny little game to play is to stretch a lock of hair, to see the spiral reform immediately!

  • type 4b: this time, the curls are no longer curly (paradox…) but in the shape of a “Z”, a beautiful sharp angle which gives fairly undefined curls. In short, it is the ideal hair for a perfect afro cut.

  • type 4c: this type of hair is similar to the previous one, but the curls are even tighter, to give you hair with a cottony appearance. This type of hair is the most fragile and driest, it is necessary to nourish the hair daily to guarantee soft and healthy hair.

Additional hair characteristics

Hair thickness

We therefore distinguish three categories of hair thickness:

  • thin hair : when we look at them in the light, they can even appear colorless because they are so fine, and yet the mass of the hair is well colored.

  • medium hair: they are neither thin nor thick and represent the hair that is most frequently found in caucasians.

  • coarse or thick hair: this time, even a single hair can be seen from miles away (okay, maybe we're exaggerating a tad...). This hair is generally very strong.

Hair thickness

We can also take into account the thickness of the hair as a whole, in other words the mass of hair that extends over your head. A little test, quick, effective and which doesn't require too much effort, to find out if you're more of the “there's only one hair on Matthieu's head” type, or more of the Rebel Princess' flamboyant mane style. from Disney:

  • put your hair in a high ponytail;
  • measure the circumference of the ponytail;
  • on average, normal hair has a circumference between 5 and 10 cm.

So if you are below, your hair is fine, and if you are above, it is rather thick!

Sebum secretion

Likewise, the secretion of sebum from the scalp influences your entire hair: if it produces too much sebum, your hair will tend to be fat, while they will be drier and brittle if sebum is lacking.

With all this information, you now know exactly where your hair fits in the wide ocean of hair types! So it's time to learn how to pamper your hair the way it should be, with a whole selection of vegetable oils, handpicked to match your hair.

Oily hair: which vegetable oils?

Why is hair oily?

Our skin is made up of sebaceous glands which, as their name suggests, produce sebum. A disruption of these glands causes overproduction of sebum originally skin, but also oily scalp. This excess sebum suffocates the roots of the hair and gives that oily and shiny appearance. This disruption can be hormonal, which is why this problem generally appears at puberty, but diet can also contribute to this phenomenon. A diet too rich in saturated fats in particular may be the cause. In addition, certain cosmetic products, taking medications or even washing too frequently can lead to this shiny appearance.

Jojoba vegetable oil against oily hair

This is thereference oil to combat oily skin and therefore also oily scalp. Jojoba, through its particular composition, is a regulator of the skin's pH, but also of sebum production. Namely that the Jojoba has a composition rich in cerides, the same as those of the skin's sebum...

Application advice: 30 minutes before your shampoo, massage your scalp with the equivalent of a tablespoon of Jojoba oil.

Complementary essential oil(s): use in synergy with essential oils lipolytic such as Atlas Cedar, Grapefruit, Rosemary with cineole.

Dry hair: which vegetable oils?

Why is hair dry?

Hair, especially the lengths, is often dry and dehydrated. Several factors can be involved such as external aggressions, the sun, sea water or wind for example. The use of heating appliances such as hair dryers, straighteners or curlers can also be avoided to eliminate this problem. If we look deeper, the protective barrier of the hair, like scales, is degraded, which exposes the hair which dries out naturally.

Vegetable oils against dry hair

Vegetable oils are ideal for treatment to deeply nourish the hair, repair it and thus prevent dehydration. Among the most effective, we find the Coco which easily penetrates the hair. It is suitable for damaged and brittle hair. Its scent is also very pleasant. In mask, the shea Butter is also very rich and nourishing due to its texture. And finally, vegetable oilLawyer is part of our top 3. It nourishes brittle and split ends to give hair a soft and supple appearance.

Application advice: apply vegetable oil or butter as a mask to the lengths and ends of the hair for 1 hour before shampooing. To be carried out weekly.

Complementary essential oil(s): in the hair routine for dry and damaged hair, vegetable oils can be combined with Complete Ylang Ylang or Roman Chamomile essential oils.

Wavy, curly, frizzy, frizzy hair: what vegetable oils?

THE Broccoli is the vegetable oil best suited to wavy to curly hair. Indeed, this oil is rich in a particular fatty acid, erucic acid, which helps to repair the structure of the hair and to coat it. It thus facilitates the formation of curls and helps prevent frizz. To this Broccoli vegetable oil, we can add as a complement the oils of Moringa and the one at Coco. Particularly emollient, these vegetable oils quickly penetrate the hair to soften it.

Application advice: apply vegetable oils as a mask before shampooing to the ends and lengths. Leave on for at least 1 hour then shampoo. It is also possible to use a few drops of vegetable oil as an after-shampoo treatment to shape curls. Be careful in this case to use it sparingly to avoid the greasy hair effect.

Fine hair: which vegetable oils?

Why is hair thin?

Hair can be naturally thin and dull, and this can be caused by a number of factors. Genetics, and unfortunately we can hardly play on it. Hormones can also affect hair thickness. Microcirculation can also weaken with age, the hair fiber becomes thinner, and the hair becomes less dense and voluminous.

The two oils will be perfect in combination.

Where does dandruff come from?

Dandruff is actually scales, that is to say dead skin, which comes off the scalp. It is a benign condition which is however quite annoying and unsightly. Dandruff can be accompanied by itching and irritation of the scalp. There are multiple causes of dandruff: infection by a fungus, a parasite or even an inflammatory skin pathology can be at the origin.

Jojoba, Mustard and Argan to fight dandruff

THE Jojoba, as a sebum-regulating oil, can be effective in fighting against oily dandruff.
