Define your skin type

Before choosing the vegetable oil best suited to your skin, you need to know your skin type! It's not always easy when you don't have a dermatologist on hand... La Compagnie des Sens therefore offers you little tips to help you know your skin better, in order to determine her state of health and be able to pamper her properly. To determine the health of your skin, dermatologists use different factors.

Signs of aging

With age, the skin changes and change of composition. A person who had oily skin as a teenager may well find themselves with dry skin a few years later! You must therefore take this skin aging into account and adapt your cosmetic care to the evolution of your skin. So, with age, the skin produces less collagen and loses elasticity. This process, dreaded by all, inevitably appears from the age of 25! It is particularly the face that is affected.

Skin color

Fair skin is generally more sensitive than black or even dark skin. It's here melanin which is the origin of skin color: the more melanin your skin produces, the more it tends towards darker shades! This melanin serves as protection for the skin against UV radiation. It is what makes us tan: through this mechanism, the body secretes melanin on the surface of the skin in order to shield against UV rays and thus protect the DNA of our skin cells. Yes, your tan is actually a kind ofprotective armor !

Natural hydration factors

Also known as Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMF, it means the same but it sounds classier in english), they are produced naturally by the skin and maintain its hydration at a stable level. Composed of a whole host of water-soluble substances, we find amino acids, urea and lactic acid. The NMF allowsabsorb and retain water in the epidermis so that the skin remains adequately hydrated. Due to UV rays, illness or old age, NMF can decrease, causing a dry skin.

Production of sebum and perspiration

In almost the entire body, the epidermis is composed of sebaceous glands, which produce sebum, and sweat glands, which produce perspiration. Sebum has a very important role for the skin: it constitutes the hydrolipidic film which covers the skin and protects it from external aggressions, preventing allergens from penetrating the body. When its production is disrupted, the skin dries out or becomes oily. Perspiration, for its part, serves to regulate body temperature to maintain optimal balance. Likewise, a disorder of the sweat glands can lead to excessive sweating, which is certainly not dangerous, but is often annoying... Too little sweat production is less known but remains a real problem: the body can no longer regulate its temperature as he must.

Your skin under the microscope: what questions to ask?

These are the factors that make each skin unique! Let us now look at the different skin types, and the care that is most appropriate for them.

To determine your skin type, you have to carry out a test that is not always very pleasant for the ego: the magnifying mirror test. On clean skin, examine your skin under a magnifying glass and ask yourself a few questions:

  • do i observe pores dilated, blackheads, redness and peeling of the skin?
  • my complexion is it rather bright or dull?
  • is my skin rough, greasy or soft ?
  • is my skin thick or thin ?
  • does my skin tension ?
  • is my skin comfortable touch ?

Thanks to all these existential questions, you will be able to determine the type of skin you have, and thus take the best possible action to take care of it!

Oily and acne-prone skin: which vegetable oils?

Why is my skin oily?

Oily skin is characterized by excessive production of sebum by the sebaceous glands. This is characterized in part by a more basic pH than the normal pH of the skin. There skin glows so, we tend to have acne pimples and pores are dilated. The skin is thick and elastic, often full of imperfections. Even when you clean it thoroughly, it's often much worse! Indeed, a scrub or a wash that is too abrasive will excite the sebaceous glands which will act as if the hydrolipidic film of the skin lacks fat... A vicious circle that must be reversed as quickly as possible!

What can I do to rebalance my skin?

Contrary to popular belief, oily skin needs to be nourished and hydrated ! It is necessary to regulate the secretion of sebum with mild and non-comedogenic vegetable oils, that is to say which do not promote the formation of spots. I hear you from here asking yourself why apply oil to already oily skin. This paradox is explained by the fact that it is somehow necessary to make the skin understand that it is sufficiently protected, and that it does not need to do turn her sebum factory as strong. A little extra advice: avoid scrubs and stripping products, this will further increase sebum secretion and the feeling of oily skin!

Combination skin: which vegetable oils?

What is combination skin?

Combination skin is characterized by oily and dry skin at the same time : the winning combo! In fact, the skin is oily in the T zone, that is to say from the tip of the chin to the forehead via the chin, as well as the entire forehead. On the rest, that is to say the cheeks, the neck and the eye contour (where the skin consists of few sebaceous glands), the skin is dry. Combination skin is often compared to oily skin. So, the advice is the same: avoid scrubs and other products that are too abrasive, instead pamper your skin gently!

What should I do to rebalance my skin?

To regain healthy skin, you must rebalance the water/oil proportion of the skin. For that, we nourish it, we hydrate it and we avoid all abrasive products ! No need to focus on this “T” zone, the rest of your face will also suffer by drying out even more. Use masks once a week at most, applying gentle products with a rather acidic pH (without smearing lemon juice on yourself, let's be careful!) to the “T” zone in order to restore the skin's pH.

Dry skin: which vegetable oils?

Why is my skin dry?

In the case of dry skin, the hydrolipidic film that protects the skin is weakened and does not fulfill its protective role well. The cause ? It is often a lack of sebum or aggression too frequent and intense which will break the skin barrier. The result is that the water present in the skin evaporates, and the skin dries out! This phenomenon can affect both mature skin and baby skin, which are very fragile. This is why it is important to protect when using household products, being exposed to the sun or wind, or even to changes in temperature.

What should I do to rehydrate my skin?

It's necessary rebuild the skin hydrolipidic film, to allow it to fulfill its role as a barrier and thus slow down the drying out of the skin. For this, we can apply vegetable oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids, to restore the skin barrier. To avoid drying out due to water, we prefer the shower to the bath (plus, it’s eco-friendly!); thus, the water stays in contact with the skin for less time, which prevents it from drying out! In addition, it is always necessary dry yourself after getting out of the shower : the water from washing that evaporates on your body will increase the risk of dehydration of the epidermis, which will increase this problem of dry skin.

Sensitive skin: which vegetable oils?

Why is my skin sensitive?

We recognize sensitive skin by these unpleasant sensations of itching, redness, tightness and feelings of heat which occur unexpectedly. In short, the skin is uncomfortable ! There are numerous external factors that can weaken the skin: climate, polluting agents, the sun and ultraviolet rays, etc. These skin types are very difficult to pamper, because they are also very responsive and may have difficulty applying certain creams or lotions. You must therefore be careful about what you put on fragile skin, and especially do not insist if the product does not correspond to your skin type!

How do I protect my sensitive skin?

We hydrate it, protect it, regenerate it and reduce inflammation. The best way to avoid skin reactions is to avoid the conditions that trigger these inflammations. We therefore avoid places that are too polluted if possible, we stop smoking, we hydrate a lot (at least 1.5L of water per day) and we protect the skin! It is essential to wash your face regularly, with clear water or a very gentle lotion, so as not to irritate the skin. Also choose gentle shower gels. Finally, nourish your skin with gentle and anti-inflammatory oils, to best protect your beautiful skin.

Mature skin, which vegetable oil?

Why is my skin mature?

Well, there you go, time passes and hormone levels produced by our body changes. The drop in certain hormones leads to decreased production of collagen and hyaluronic acid by the body, two little soldiers who act for the firmness of the skin. This may therefore imply a sagging skin or the appearance of wrinkles. The appearance of these wrinkles is favored by the movement of the subcutaneous muscles: if young, elastic skin returns to its original shape very quickly, mature skin will see these expression lines anchored. Even though it's not very pleasant to see these little fine lines appear, it's completely normal. It even adds a little charm!

What to do to fight against skin aging?

To fight against the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin, some say it is necessary avoid straining the subcutaneous muscles : in short, we stop laughing, smiling, grunting, showing the slightest sign of emotion. As you can imagine, at the Compagnie des Sens we are not ready to stop laughing! Dull skin: which vegetable oil to choose?

Why is my skin dull?

Often, the primary cause of dull skin is lack of sunlight and vitamin D. The skin becomes grayish, tired, and winter sounds the death knell for the homogeneity of your complexion. All this implies that the skin takes its role of detoxifier less seriously, and generates a accumulation of toxins. The fact that the skin is then less exposed to air and light undermines its balance. It becomes pale and can even thicken in places. The result is that your skin can become sensitive and unbalanced! I can not wait for summer ...

What to do to regain a radiant complexion?

First of all, we must remedy this lack of sunlight and expose yourself a little, with adequate sun protection ! Your body will secrete vitamin D, to fill this gap which means that even your morale can be dull when winter never ends.
